Desciption
Womas are a medium sized python with dark eyes, moderately stout body, short tail, slender head that is slightly broader than the neck, a somewhat pointed snout and characteristic banding. Our breeding group consists of eastern specimens formerly described as Collaris. As adults they keep the bright orange head with black blotches over the eyes and snout that is common in juveniles and have a pale yellow overall body colour with contrasting reddish brown bands. They reach an adult size between 5-6 feet.
Womas can be voracious feeders and have an incredible feeding instinct that can become rather aggressive once the first food article is eaten. Hatchlings generally feed readily on rat pinks or pink to fuzzy mice. Our adults prefer rats. They are known to consume reptiles in the wild but we have never offered that food source.
Husbandry
Woma husbandry is fairly straightforward. We provide a thermal gradient with them as with all our reptiles, offering a basking spot up to 88°F with the cool end of the cage in the mid to low 70's. We keep them in small groups in a cage but separate them for feeding.
Because they are such aggressive feeders, Womas can be raised to 4 feet in the first year. While we have successfully bred them at 18 months age our experience indicates that 2½ years or more is needed the majority of the time for the animal to reach sexual maturity, regardless of size. Womas are a healthy, hardy snake that flourishes in captivity. They are a clean animal with no special humidity requirements and generally very low maintenance. Their combination of awesome beauty and great disposition make them a favourite of all who own them.
